Los Angeles: Acclaimed newsroom drama The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, will conclude with its fifth and final season in 2027, Apple TV+ has announced.
The series, which premiered in 2019 as one of the streaming platform's flagship original productions, has earned multiple Emmy, Screen Actors Guild and Critics Choice awards over four seasons.
Jennifer Aniston, who also serves as an executive producer, said the creative team had the opportunity to give the story a meaningful conclusion.
"From the beginning, Apple has supported our vision for The Morning Show… We've become such a family, and we're all so excited to share this final season. Going in knowing it would be our last, we were so fortunate to craft the conclusion with intentionality and honour these characters the way they deserve," she said.
Reese Witherspoon, who is also an executive producer, described working on the series as "the honour of a lifetime".
"This was always more than a show about a newsroom — it was a show about why the newsroom matters. About freedom of the press and the journalists who protect the fourth estate, often at great cost," she said.
A drama rooted in the changing newsroom
Set behind the scenes of a popular American breakfast television programme, The Morning Show follows the personal and professional lives of anchors, producers and network executives as they navigate power struggles, ethical challenges and a rapidly evolving media industry.
Aniston plays veteran presenter Alex Levy, while Witherspoon stars as ambitious journalist Bradley Jackson.
Over its four seasons, the series has woven real-world issues into its storylines, including the #MeToo movement, the COVID-19 pandemic, newsroom politics, corporate mergers, disinformation, freedom of the press and the growing influence of technology on journalism.
The currently streaming fourth season is set after the UBA-NBN merger and explores deepfakes, conspiracy theories and corporate cover-ups in an increasingly polarised United States.
Final chapter for the characters
Showrunner Charlotte Stoudt said the final season would focus on where the central characters' journeys ultimately lead.
"For five seasons, these messy, resilient journalists have chased their dreams. Now we'll see where their endeavours lead them — what story they will ultimately choose for themselves," she said.
The ensemble cast includes Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie and Jon Hamm. The fifth season will also feature Jeff Daniels, Renee Rapp, Jesse Williams, Sean Hayes and Lizzy Caplan.
Produced by Media Res, The Morning Show is executive produced by Charlotte Stoudt, Mimi Leder, Michael Ellenberg, Lauren Neustadter, Kristin Hahn, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
